    Warren, Michigan History

Warren was first established in 1837 as Hickory Township and renamed Aba for a while. Later, the area took on the name Warren in honor of American Revolutionary War hero Gen. Joseph Warren. Then in 1893, the Village of Warren was established. From its founding until it was connected to Detriot by streetcar and rail in 1904, the hamlet retained its rural identity. It did not assume urban identity until 1955, when the township and village were combined.

Warren includes Center Line, a community established independently from the township in 1925 and became a city in 1936. The early decades after World War II saw a significant acceleration of the industrial and residential growth that had started in the 1920s. For several significant automakers, the city produces automobiles and auto parts. In the city are the Detroit Arsenal, the General Motors Technical Center, and a 1954 Macomb Community College campus, all created by architect Eero Saarinen.
